Zheng-Hui Liu 1?She Tang 1?Cheng-Qiang Ding 1 1 National Engineering and Technology Center for Information Agriculture/Key Laboratory of Crop Physiology and Ecology in Southern China/ Jiangsu Collaborative Innovation Center for Modern Crop Production, Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing 210095, China Abstract Rice (Oryza sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) are both the stable food crops, and play an irreplaceable role in national food security. Rice-wheat rotation, the dominant practice in the middle-lower Yangtze River area of China, has been characterized by summer rice-winter wheat double-cropping rotation. However, in which region excessive application of nitrogen(N) fertilizer leads to low nitrogen utilization efficiency. To our best known, no studies have ever investigated the effect of both reduction fertilizer N in rice and wheat season, and the effect on crops yield, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and soil fertility. In the present study, we conducted a two years filed experiment under three N fertilizer rates 180, 240, 300 kg N ha?1 for rice season and 135, 180, 225 kg N ha?1 for wheat season. There was no difference in yield among all treatments in rice. However, in the wheat season reduction fertilizer N has significantly effected on yield. The previous season, current season reduction fertilizer and the interaction between previous and current season reduction fertilizer(R×W) have no effect on yield in rice season, but not in wheat season. N rates have significantly influence on N uptake and NUE values were observed. In rice season nitrogen agronomic efficiency (NAE), nitrogen physiological efficiency (NPE), nitrogen partial factor productivity (NPF) and nitrogen recovery efficiency(NRE) increased by 20.6-42.5%, 11.1-15.8%, 23.9-40.2% and 4.8-28.2%, respectiv
