Grid Computing) Examples of Grid Computing projects LCG (LHC Computing Grid) – the world’s largest single science grid project EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-sciencE) – sharing computing power for all sciences – world’s largest multi-science production grid service – from Europe to China EUChinaGrid project Grid application in physics and biology at PKU How to participate and to use the Computing Grid? Summary Outline of the Review What is the Internet? What is the Web? Why was it invented at CERN? What is the Grid? Why is the High Energy Physics community developing the Grid? Will the Grid be available to all of you? What is the Internet? It’s a networking infrastructure which connects together millions of computer worldwide The connected computers speak with the same language, i.e. use the same protocol (a format for transmitting data) TCP/IP The name of “Internet” came from the idea of “Interconnected network” What is the Web? World Wide Web (WWW) is a service built on top of the internet that allows computers to share information To make a document public, a user must upload the document to a special computer (called a server) In the server, the document has a unique web address (or called URL) Calling that URL from anywhere in the world, anybody can access and see the document Why was the WWW invented at CERN? Science depends on free access to information and exchange of ideas. CERN is the hub of a worldwide community of 6500 scientists in 80 countries. At the end of 1980’s, during the preparation of the previous large project at CERN with the involvement of O(1000) physicist around whole world, the need to share documents in a global way became vital. How did it start? 1989: Tim Berners-Lee circulates “Information Management: A proposal” to help
