Abstract
H.264 had formally become the international video coding standard in 2003. Compared with the traditional video coding standards, H.264 has improved a lot, especially in coding efficiency and image quality. These improvements were benefited from the advanced technologies. However, it also increased the codec’s complexity, which means H.264 might face big challenges in the real-time field. So the real-time embedded H.264 codec had already become a hot-pot in the resrarch idea.This article used H.264 codec technology to design and implement a real-time decoder system based on Blackfin platform.
First, the artical generally introduced the research status of video codec and its development both at home and abroad. Then we had done some statistical comparisons among the open-source H.264 decoders, analyzed the main reason of their low performance on the embedded environment. After talking with the current solution of embeded H.264 decoder systems, we raised a solution of
H.264 decoder software system based on the Blackfin platform. According to the special requirements of the PMP, we designed platform scalable software architecture. With analyze of the ITU reference decoder, we re-designed some bottleneck modules, and did some optimizations on CAVLC entropy decoding, non-entire pixel interpolation and intra prediction and compensation algorithms. Base on the hardware architecture and instruction set of Blackfin, we have re-designed the SIMD implementations of some complex modules, such as IDCT, non-entire pixel interpolation and so on.
With the ITU’s standard sequences, we did a series of test on our decoder software system. According to the result on Blackfin 537 ezkit, the average decode speed of our decoder software has reached 40 frames per second, which could almost satisfy the Real-time requirement.
