Impacts of Traffic Characteristics according to Snowy Weather Conditions on an Expressway by Yoon-Hyuk Choi, Ph.D. Senior Researcher Transportation Research Division Korea Expressway Corporation Research Institute, Hwaseong 445-812, South Korea (TEL) 82-31-371-3429, (FAX) 82-31-371-3319, yhchoi76@ex.co.kr Abstract Changes in weather and climate extremes can have considerable impact on transportation. In this study, we analyzed the changes in road traffic characteristics caused by snowfall, and the main results are as follows. First, on a comparison between the snowy day and the sunny day, the average traffic increase was 12.3~25.6%, while the average speed increased was 11.2~ 18.9%. This difference is statistically credible. Second, the changes in the driver’s behavior caused by the snowy condition were higher for traffic volumes compared with the speed. With sunny day conditions, approximately 19% of the drivers gave up and chose alternatives during the snowfall while the remaining drivers reduced their speed by approximately 15%. Third, despite the snowfall, volume of buses tends to relatively increase. This might be because there were countermeasures against snowfall, such as the increased number of running buses and the adjustment of their intervals. Fourth, in the comparison of traffic characteristics between during and after the snowfall, the traffic decreased even after the snowfall while the speed slightly recovered after the snowfall. It was found that the change of traffic characteristics is greater in terms of traffic while there were no significant changes in terms of speed.
