At the moment, it looks like Grove is leaning toward maintaining its traditional all-female character. The faculty alone wants to admit men, but theirs is a minority position. The students and alumnae join hands in defending Grove traditions. Or so the writer’s tale runs. In order to for it to win any prizes for nonfiction, some questions have to be answered.
In contrast to most of the other classes of respondents, the Grove faculty favored admitting men. Apparently, the reason for this was a desire to boost enrollment. What majority favored admitting men? The faculty, after all, represents the best-honed minds on campus. It is they that keep abreast of recent trends in higher education. It would not do to neglect their voice without taking their measure.
On the nay side, an eye-popping 80% of student survey respondents want to keep the college all female. Are we to understand, therefore, that eighty percent of Grove students oppose a switch? In order to even begin to credit that claim, we would need to know how many students responded as compared with total enrollment. Was the sampling at all representative? Survey respondents are, almost by definition, slightly deviant from the norm in that they have nothing better to do than to take surveys. The possibility runs strong that respondents have some axe to grind or interest in the outcome. A clique of a half dozen lesbians cannot well stand for the whole student body. (One hopes.) Worse, the survey was conducted by the student government – a group one might expect to identify strongly with college traditions. It is necessary therefore to take a good close look at that survey’s questions. Was the survey an impartial questionnaire or a pastiche of leading questions designed to produce a predetermined result?
Leading, loaded, limited
In a separate survey, over half of the alumnae who bothered to respond similarly favored no change. What were they asked? How many alumnae responded? How many were asked to respond? Do th
