2.2 Common Problematic Sentences
Sentence fragments:
Every sentence must have a subject and a verb and must express a complete
thought. A word group that lacks a subject or a verb and does not express a
complete thought is a fragment. Following are the most common types of
fragments that people write.
1. Phrase fragment
eg: I’ll meet you in the library. At four in the afternoon .
My son keeps several pets in his room. Including hamsters and mice .
2. Fragment without a subject
eg: She stood by the window. And looked at the street below .
Alice loved getting wedding presents. But hated writing thank-you notes .
For these two types of fragments, an easy way out is to attach the fragments to
the sentences that come before them.

eg: We preparing for the coming exam.
It being the day before our holiday.
Add an auxiliary verb or change the ―–ing‖ to the correct form. For example:
(We were preparing) and (It was the day).
4. Dependent clause fragment
eg: You can’t ring her up now. For it’s already midnight .
I won’t leave the house. Until I hear from you .
A dependent clause cannot stand alone. It depends on another statement to
complete the thought.
Two ways for you to correct the dependent clause fragment. First, attach it to the
sentence that comes after it or the sentence that comes before it, whichever makes

Second, simply eliminate the dependent word and rewrite the sentence like this: ―I
will wait to hear from you.‖
Writers, especially beginners, should make sentences that are grammatically complete
and avoid making sentences without a subject or
