Wereporttwonewcatalysts,PdCoAuandPdTi,thatshow
essentiallyequalorslightlybetterperformancethanthemore
expensivePtcurrentlyusedfortheoxygenreductionreaction(ORR)
inprotonexchangemembranefuelcells(PEMFC).Wealso
demonstratethatthepreviouslydescribedhighthroughputscreening
methodbasedonscanningelectrochemicalmicroscopy(SECM)1
isindeedagoodpredictorofelectrocatalystperformanceina
PEMFC.Pthasbeenthecathodeelectrocatalystofchoicesince
thefirstfuelcellexperimentsin1839byGrove,2andtherehas
beenanintensesearchforlessexpensive,moreabundantnon-
platinumelectrocatalysts3thatcanofferacceptableperformance.
Theseelectrocatalystswerefoundusingthepreviouslydescribed1
guidelinesandrapidscreeningofselectedmetalcombinations(for
example,PdwithCo,Au,andTi)overawiderangeofcomposi-
tionsusingaSECM-basedcombinatorialapproach4toidentify
suitablemetalcombinationswithoptimumcompositionsthatexhibit
goodactivityforORR.1ThisscreeningtechniqueisbaseduponFigure1.Comparisonofsteady-statepolarizationcurvesofthevario
