Thispaperpresentsthederivationandimplementationofaflexibilitybasedlargerementmethod(LIM)forsolv
ingnonlinearstructuralproblems.Thefiniteelementdiscementandapproacheshavebeendevelopedforsolving
nonlinearstructuralproblem.Thediscementbasedfiniteelementmethodrequiresastepbystepapproachformate
rialnonlinearysisthatdependsonflowtheory.Furthermore,significantmeshrefinementisoftenrequiredinstic
zones.ThemainadvantageoftheLIMisthatitseparatestheusageofthethreesystemequationintotwostages,global
linearstageandlocalnonlinearstage.HereLIMformulationsaredevelopedfortwodimensionalbeamelementscon
trolledbyanelasticfullysticmaterialmodel.Thesenewformulationsaredemonstratedusingsimplenonlinearprob
lemsandtheresultsarecomparedtothoseobtainedfromthediscementmethod.Theexampleshighlighttheaccuracy
andthecomputationalefficiencyoftheflexibilitybasedlargerementmethodforthisclassofstructuralproblems.
