EverySaturday,JasonlookedforwardtogoingtoChinatowntoshopforfoodbecausehismomlethimpickhisfavoritesnacks:roastporkbunsandbubbletea.
ThestreetsinChinatownwerecrowdedwithcarsandpedestrians.Hismothercouldnotfindthesameexoticvegetablesinthelocalsupermarkets,sotheyalwayscameheretoshop.WhatfascinatedJasonwastastyroastpork,eventhewholepigshangingonbighooksinthewindows,theirskinsroastedtoaglisteningbrown.Jason’smouthwouldwaterjustlookingatthem.
AstheypassedthenewsstandcarryingChinesenewspapersandmagazines,Jasonspottedanoldmansittingonthesidewalk.Hishairwaslong,white,andmessy.Thefacebeneathwaslined,dirty,andunshaven.Frayedandtornclothingwrappedaroundhisthinframe,andinthiskindofcoldweather,heevenworesandals,hisfeetbluewithcold.Hebangedanemptycanagainstthesidewalk.AsJasonwalkedby,hecouldsmellamustyodorandpinchedhisnostrilstogether.TheoldmanreachedoutandtouchedJason’sleftleg.Instinctively,Jasongatheredallhisstrengthtojerk(猛拉)hislegawayandkicktheoldman’shandheavily.Frightened,hehurriedtocatchupwithhismotherwithoutlookingback.
“Mom,theoldmantouchedme,”hecried,“Hetouchedmewithhisdirtyhands.It’sdisgusting!Andhesmelledtoo.”
