【标题】《呼啸山庄》中希思克厉夫的双重人格 【作者】张虹霞 【关键词】性格;扭曲;分析 【指导老师】康 康 【专业】英语 【正文】I. IntroductionWuthering Heights has long been considered as one of the most popular and highly regarded novels in English literature. Emily Bronte, its author, was born in July 20, 1818, in Thornton, a small town located in the northern part of England. She lived an eccentric, closely guarded life?.Her father worked as a church rector. She had three elder sisters, a brother and a younger sister. But unfortunately her two elder sisters and the brother died very early, so did her mother. She lived in a place far from the city. 1 Such living environment leads to Emily Bronte’s quiet character and her determination to devote into writing Emily Bronte was deeply influenced by the mysticism of cosmology and soul view. She treated human religion coldly and worshipped eternal spirit of nature. Her sister Charlotte Bronte once commented on Emily Bronte’s life as that?“My sister’s disposition was not naturally gregarious; circumstances favored her tendency to seclusion; except to go to church or take a walk on the hills, she rarely crossed the threshold of home. Though her feeling for the people around was benevolent, intercourse with them she never sought; nor, with very few exceptions, ever experienced. And yet she knew them.”2 It is common-place to say that she is sphinx-like in her remoteness.Stronger than a man, simpler than a child, her nature stood alone. It is Emily’s character that greatly influences the way she describes the characters in Wuthering Heights: Hindly’s cruelty, Catherine’s betrayed love, Heathcliff’s distortion etc.?Wuthering Heights is an extraordinary novel. Many people hold that it is a story about a poor man, abused, betrayed and distorted by his social betters because he is a poor nobody. Instead of sad emotion, the masterpiece uses intense love, fierce hatred and endless revenge to replace the melancholy and gloom. As a love story, it is one of the most moving ones sin
