ABSTRACT
Theresidualmeridionalcirculation derivedfrom thetransformedEulerian—mean thermodynamicequa-
tionandcontinuityequationcanbeseparatedintotwoparts,theslowlyvaryingdiabaticcirculationandthe
transientcirculation.asdemonstrated byothers.W ecalculated andcomposite—analyzed thetransientand
diabaticcirculationfor14stratosphericsuddenwarmingfSSW 1eventsfrom 1979 2002byusingthedaily
ECM W F reanalysisdata.Specifically.thetransientresidualmeridionalcirculationwascalculatedbothwith
and withoutinclusion oftheeddy heattransportterm in thetransformed Eulerian—mean thermodynamic
equationtoinvestigatetheimportanceoftheeddyheattransportterm.Theresultsshowedthatcalculations
oftransientresidualmeridionalcirculation presentrapidvariationsduringSSW s.withorwithoutinclusion
oftheeddyheattransportterm.Although thepatternsoftransientresidualmeridionalcirculationwith
theeddyheattransportterm weresimilartothatwithouttheeddyheattransportterm duringSSW .the
magnitudesintheupperstratosphereandhigh-latituderegionsdiffered.Asforthediabaticcirculation.its
dailyvariationsweresmal1duringSSW events.anditspatternswereinagreementwithitsmonthlyaverage.
