DYNAMIC SIMULATION APPLICATION IN MODERN POWER PLANT CONTROL AND DESIGNThis paper discusses some experience with PC based continuous dynamic simulation model and its application in the improvement of control philosophy, integration of plant components and diagnosis of plant problems in modem fossil firedpowerplants. The objectives of dynamic simulation studies include new control philosophies evaluation, operational perfortance and analysis, field problem solving, operational procedure development and design confirmation. Some examples are included in the paper as follows:a) Improved pulverizer dynamic response.b) Improved steam temperature control.c) Improved drum level control.d) Reheater and HP bypass attemperation system.e) Sizing of “sweetwater condenser” for steam temperature spray attemperationIntroductionLarge power plants are characterised by non-linear systems with many interactions among their component parts and key control parameters.The operating characteristics of these plants have to be fully understood in order to be able to design an optimal control strategy to meet the specific operational requirements, and to ensure maximum safety and lifetime of such large capitalized investment. However, due to financial considerations, time constraints and the potential risks involved, it is not feasible or safe to do comprehensive tests at a commercial plant for new designs and investigations. Dynamic simulation using a digital computer has become a very useful tool which enables extensive analysis and tests of new designs and investigations. The refinement of existing control philosophy for large fossil plants is also necessary to meet the more stringent operating requirements because more and more large fossil units are being required to perform the daily load cycling previously allocated to smaller units.
