Abstract Abstract People pay close attention to left-handed artificial electromagnetic materials since professor Simths experiments verify the negative refraction phenomenon. New left-handed structures are created and analyzed constantly, at the same time people make research on their application in microwave, and design some components based on the features, such as antenna, filter, diplexer and so on. Planar microwave circuit in which microstrip occupies an important position, play an important role in microwave and system integration. Left-handed artificial electromagnetic material designed by transmission line are called composite right/left-handed transmission line(CRLH). In this thesis we study the application of artificial metamaterial in microstrip circuit, and design some components such as filter, hybrid and so on. The developments of artificial left-handed material at home and abroad are introduced firstly, and then the behaviors of electromagnetic wave traveling in left-handed material are described. In later chapters we present one kind of CRLH unit, based on which, a band pass filter is designed making use of the frequency selectivity feature. then we improve it to a better one with good inhibition; the CRLH unit has nonlinear phase-frequency response, by using this a phase shifter and a dual stop band filter are designed; CRLH transmission line with arbitrary characteristic impedance is studied, and we design CRLH lines with 35.4  and 70.7  impedance, the
